Fatimid Water Filters

Image Coming Soon
Fatimid Era

This series of pierced earthenware water filters from the Fatimid period are reminiscent of the water filters excavated from Fustāt (old Cairo) dated from the 10-12th centuries. Decorated to fit within the round shape of the vessel, each piece contains a unique geometric or figural lattice design that was both decorative and functional, filtering out water as it would pass through. When sealed, the filter protected the liquid inside from insects and debris. The designs in this series contain a variety of animal motifs, radial geometric patterns, and Arabic calligraphy that showcase the intricacy and functional ingenuity of the everyday objects.
